Our Story

Our story officially began in the 1920s when Wolf Kossoff, a Jewish refugee from Kyiv, established the first Kossoffs Bakery in London. Between then and the 1980s he continued to expand, opening several new bakeries in the East End where he brought traditional Jewish baked goods to the communities living there.

Two generations of bakers followed, establishing their own bakeries, including Wolf's grandson David. With time the product offering diversified to include a broader range of baked goods, while still keeping the Jewish tradition alive.

David's son Aaron helped out at the bakeries from as young as 5, frying doughnuts and shaping his first loaves of bread. It was during the years of working at his fathers business that he decided that one day he would continue the family tradition of on-site artisan baking.

Aaron began preparing for this by attending Le Cordon Bleu, where he graduated in 2014 with Le Grande Diplome. Following that he cut his teeth in the industry with spells at The Ivy Covent Garden, Little Bread Pedlar, Honey & Co. and most prestigiously at Ottolenghi where he was Head Baker at the age of 26.

In 2018 while working at Little Bread Pedlar, Aaron met fellow pastry-chef and future girlfriend Jo Clarke. They connected over a shared love of food - and especially baked goods. Following stints at Pophams, and as Head Baker at The Daisy Green Collection, Jo joined Aaron in preparing to open the latest instalment in the Kossoffs series.

Aaron and Jo, together with Head Chef James Thomson, started the process of developing the recipes for the new opening. With Aaron taking care of the bread, Jo developing the viennoiserie, and James utilising the experience gained from his stints as Sous Chef at Little House and Head Chef at Ottolenghi to create the recipes for delicious salads and sandwiches, they prepared to open in the heart of Kentish Town.

In July 2021 Kossoffs Kentish Town opened its doors to the local community, and since then our customer base and product offerings have continued to grow. We are so grateful to the customers that have supported us throughout the journey, and cannot wait to continue to serve them as well as the wider London community.

Aarons objective has always been to learn from the success of his predecessors whilst injecting his own experience and knowledge into the recipes. The outcome is a community-centred and family friendly cafe and bakery producing some of the best food in London.
